Diane Wetendorf is an advocate, trainer and consultant specializing in police-perpetrated domestic violence. In 1996, while director of counseling for Life Span, a community domestic violence agency, Diane created S.A.B.L.E. (Spousal Abuse By Law Enforcement), a unique program which provided specialized counseling, legal and advocacy services for victims of officer-involved domestic violence. She worked collaboratively with police departments to develop policies, provided systemic advocacy to law enforcement institutions nationwide, trained community advocates, and provided thousands of hours of individual and group counseling.
In 2002, Diane established an independent corporation dedicated to providing advocacy, training and consulting services specific to police-perpetrated domestic violence. Diane provides consultation for women who are victims of abusive police officers and technical assistance to advocates, law enforcement, and allied professionals.
Her training, audio conferences and workshops address the unique challenges law enforcement and advocates face when working with victims of officer-involved domestic violence.
Diane also serves as an expert witness in police-perpetrated domestic violence cases.
She is the author of Police Domestic Violence: A Handbook for Victims, the first book written specifically for survivors of police-perpetrated domestic violence, as well as Crossing the Threshold: Female Officers and Police-Perpetrated Domestic Violence, a ground-breaking book for women in law enforcement.
Diane is a consultant to the Battered Women's Justice Project (BWJP) providing training and technical assistance to advocates, counselors, law enforcement and other professionals working with officer-involved domestic violence. She authored When the Batterer Is a Law Enforcement Officer: A Guide for Advocates, which is available through BWJP.
Diane has extensive experience conducting workshops and seminars for local, state and national audiences. Topics include victim safety and intervention, the unique dynamics due to the abuser's professional status, working with victims who are also in law enforcement, departmental responsibilities, firearm possession laws, and collaboration between advocates and law enforcement agencies.
